The Details

Tasting Note This wine is pristine and intense with aromas and flavours of lemon myrtle and tea tree blossom. With crushed quartz minerality, it is evocative, seamless and ageless.
Best Enjoyed With Enjoy with kingfish sashimi and chilli lime dressing, or vegetable spring rolls with vietnamese herbs.
Treatment The grapes from the oldest vines on our Pewsey Vale Vineyard Estate are handpicked and the juice wild fermented, then aged for a few months on lees before bottling and release. The 1961 Block is proof that a healthy, biodiverse vineyard needs little winemaking intervention, as the grapes and yeast from the vineyard combine perfectly to make this evocative wine.

Accolades

Crisply clean, tensioned palate
Light, bright yellow colour; the bouquet is young and fresh with straw/dried floral and mineral/steely notes, then there's a crisply clean, tensioned palate that is very dry and penetrating, concentrated and long lingering in the aftertaste, with a faint trace of bitterness. Very good and will richly reward cellaring.

It always seems to be a site that can coax the very best out of the riesling grape.
With vines planted between 1961 and 2010 at close to 500m elevation in the Eden Valley, Pewsey Vale is a pretty special place. It always seems to be a site that can coax the very best out of the riesling grape. Pristine characters of freshly squeezed lime and lemon fruits with a blast of crunchy green apple and hints of crushed quartz, Christmas lily and lighter wafts of marzipan and petrichor. Detailed and precise, the fruit rides on rails of minerally acidity, setting a cracking pace across the palate before finishing pure and true. Great stuff.

Balanced, food-friendly and refreshing
Initially quite shy, after some aeration and warming in glass, this opens to a delicate nose of white florals, lemon balm and lime essence. The laser-focused palate is equally understated and elegant. Dry with a slight skinsy grip and mouthwatering acidity, it’s balanced, food-friendly and refreshing now, but could cellar for at least another decade, or likely longer.

Generous layers of flavour
This slightly unusual take on Eden Valley Riesling is always worth seeking out. Wild yeast ferments and some lees ageing adds impressive details to the traditional Pewsey Vale package. Tightly wound, it offers up a focused core of saline, granitic aromas with an exotic citrus skin and pith lift. Textural and savoury in style, a refreshing burst of acidity underpins generous layers of flavour, before unwinding over a more supple finish. A wine that needs a little time to show its best.

This is a super cool and super smart Riesling
The pretty perfume and fruit purity of Eden Valley Riesling absolutely glistens and explodes from the glass. What a fabulous wine this is. Glorious in every way, white flowers are in superb form led by Jasmine with lemon myrtle hot on its tail. Green apples, fresh pears and white nectarines throw themselves at you but are bound by generous doses of lemon zest. A minerality vibe rattles through the core - I just love the riverstone feels. It just sizzles. Finishing with crisp acidity, this is a super cool and super smart Riesling. Drink now to embrace the freshness or hold for ten years+.

A megastar
Oh yes, this Pewsey Vale 1961 Block Riesling 2022 is the purist’s champion. A megastar Australian dry Riesling, but without the profile (that it deserves). Soured from the original, contour-planted 1961 Block on the Pewsey Vale Vineyard, there is this immense wall of dry limey power that seems limitless. Yeah, I know, a wine like this is playing to my bias for steely dry whites, but it’s impossible to deny the wave surge of minerally (hate that word, but it’s the only way here) citrus fruit that still looks like it was picked just a few months ago (rather than a year and a half). A megastar I tell you! And ridiculously cheap.

Power and beauty
While the original Pewsey Vale vineyard was planted in 1847, this release of the 1961 Block comes from the oldest (modern) part of the vineyard. Handpicked fruit, wild ferment and briefly maturation on lees. Winemaker is Louisa Rose. Packaged in ‘old school’ green glass. Pale straw with green hued highlights. Richer and fuller expression with savoury, minerally, wet stone and nutty characters underpinning focused lemon and lime citrus with deep white florals. The palate tightly wound and intense. Tension and length with a breadth of flavour that carries long and dry. Acidity turns the volume up through the tail yet never shrieks. Power and beauty.
